Vision and Culture

WHO WE ARE

Issy Select (IGBA) is a volunteer-run, nonprofit select basketball program for 4th–8th grade girls in the Issaquah High School community. We are a founding feeder program of the Eastside Travel League (ETL) — one of approximately 36 KINGCO-based programs competing across the greater Seattle Eastside. Our Gold teams compete in ETL; our Purple teams compete in the PEAK League or Lions League. Every player we develop is on a path toward Issaquah High School varsity basketball.

OUR VISION

“Creating Future Legacy Now.” — ETL Mission

We share that vision. Our goal is not to simply win this Saturday’s game — it is to send confident, capable, resilient young women to IHS who love the game and know how to compete as a team. Success looks like a player and teammate who wants to keep playing, keeps growing, and carries what she learned on the court into every part of her life.

We also believe great teams are built on respect. Our players are expected to model ROOTS — respect for Rules, Opponents, Officials, Teammates, and Self — because competing hard only works when we compete with discipline, humility, and care for one another.

WHAT WE STAND FOR

We believe in competitive team performance and in preparing players to play the game at a high level. For 4th–8th grade athletes, that happens through a disciplined, fun, and engaging environment that builds the habits, decision-making, and team-first mindset required to perform. Over time, players who learn to compete together will win more — and, more importantly, will keep wanting to play.

Winning matters, and we compete to win, but not at all costs. We pursue high performance through daily habits, effort, and consistency rather than shortcuts. Our goal is not to avoid pressure or adversity — it is to teach players how to respond to it. When teams are challenged in the right way, they grow faster, perform better, and become more confident competitors.

We measure effort over outcomes because outcomes are often outside a player’s control; her effort never is. That focus on effort is how we build character over trophies — the habits of discipline, resilience, and accountability formed in practice and competition are what players carry long after the final buzzer.

And all of it starts with relationships before correction: a player who feels known, valued, and supported will take more risks, absorb more coaching, and grow faster than one who is simply managed. In that environment, standards stay high, accountability is clear, and players and teams learn to compete with both confidence and toughness.

These ideas are not separate — they are one connected approach to developing strong, competitive athletes and strong teams.

HOW WE COACH

Our coaches follow a Constraints-Led Approach — we design environments where players discover solutions themselves rather than waiting to be told what to do. Small-sided games (2v2, 3v3) create more touches, more decisions, and more learning per minute than any drill. Mistakes aren’t failure; they’re the mechanism of growth.

• Connection before correction — kids learn best when they feel safe and valued

• Let them play, let them fail, let them figure it out

• Praise effort, toughness, and teamwork — never shame a mistake

• 4:1 positive-to-corrective feedback ratio — confidence is a skill we train

• No “joystick coaching” from the sideline — release players to the game

• Compete with energy, discipline, and purpose every day — we create demanding environments where effort, communication, and toughness are expected

Our coaches are expected to serve as role models for our players, leading by example through their words and actions. All parents sign and are expected to abide by a Coach Code of Conduct.

BALANCING THE PLAYER AND THE TEAM

Every season begins with a Pre-Season Player Profile so coaches can understand what motivates each player, how she learns, and how she wants to be coached. We know players as individuals to help them grow with confidence — but always in service of the team. Every player is held to shared standards of effort, accountability, toughness, teamwork, and respect.

Development is not just individual skill-building; it is learning to make teammates better, communicate with purpose, share responsibility, and play within something bigger than yourself.

That balance also guides playing time. Playing time is earned through effort, attendance, attitude, coachability, and team-first habits; it is not guaranteed or equal. At the same time, players who consistently put in the work should have opportunities to compete and learn in games. Issy Select is not recreational basketball, where equal playing time is the standard. We are a competitive development program: we compete to win while growing every player who commits to the team.

All players sign and are expected to abide by a Player Code of Conduct.

OUR PARENT CULTURE

Parents are the most powerful influence on a young athlete’s experience. Research from the Aspen Institute shows that 70% of kids quit sports by age 13. The leading cause isn’t the difficulty of the game; it’s adult behavior: pressure, over-coaching, and overemphasis on winning. We ask every IGBA parent to commit to a different standard.

• Cheer. Don’t coach. Let players think.

• After games, ask: “What did you enjoy?” “I love watching you play.”

• Model ROOTS: respect for Rules, Opponents, Officials, Teammates, and Self

• Observe the 24-hour rule before raising any concern with a coach All parents sign and are expected to abide by a Parent Code of Conduct.
